This weekend, my family had the opportunity to participate in the Race for the Cure. I have participated in this race in the past, but this year was a bit more personal for our family. About 3 years ago, my aunt Colleen was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to have a mastectomy, she underwent chemotherapy and she maintained a positive attitude throughout the entire process. We were all amazed by her strength and ability to get through such a huge trial. Well, about 3 months ago, she started having some numbness in her face and some weakness on her right side. She went to the doctor and they found a mass in her brain. They had to do surgery and removed a tumor the size of a golfball from the left side of her brain. The surgery went well and then the results of the tumor came back...metastatic breast cancer. Cells from her original breast cancer had traveled to her brain and this tumor has been developing over the past couple of years. She just finished radiation therapy and is again impressing all of us with her positive attitude and perserverance through hard times. We decided to join Colleen in her fight against breast cancer, so we ordered pink camo t-shirts and headed down to the race. This is usually a pretty emotional 5K because of all of the stories of survivors and memories of those who have passed away from breast cancer, but as you can imagine, this was an especially emotional day for all of us and a great way to start off Mother's Day weekend. We love you Colleen and we will keep fighting with you!
